The government recognises that food insecurity and social/economic

hardship has led to a need for a a proactive approach to food and nutrition education. The HAF programme delivers a number of important benefits to participants, these include:

  1. Receive healthy and nutritious meals
  2. Developing a greater understanding of food, nutrition and other health related issues

Visit the government website HAF page

1. Receiving healthy and nutritious meals

We recognise that as well as simply supplying food that eating itself is a powerful

learning experience and therefore the quality and quanity of food we supply is of

upmost importance.

With this in mind we contract with recommended and reputable caterers who supply

nutritious and healthy menus, this will include a variety of fruit and vegetables of

various origins / textures / tastes that provide growing bodies with many vital nutrients,

as well as some foods that may more familiar to participants but may be considered

less nutritious and would be eaten in moderation.

• In Brighton this is https://www.littletums.co.uk/

• In West Sussex this is https://gocatering.co.uk

2. Developing a greater understanding of food, nutrition and other health related issues

2a. Formal session time activities.

Over the course of a week long camp children get to experience a preparing and

cooking a number of items. This would include:

• Marshmallows / Smores

• Banana splits

• Bread twists / flatbreads

• Popcorn

We recognise that this represents an accessible introduction to talking about cooking,

nutrition and diet even if the snacks are of limited nutrition.

2b. Informal break time activities.

This is through the delivery of a daily healthy snack taste test at break time, its aim

is to help participants get hands on and try different foods and to support children and

young people to better engage with healthier lifestyle choices.

This could take a number of forms, for example:

• Trying 2 different colour / types of a fruit/vegetable and deciding which you like

most, for example a green or red grape.

• Trying 2 different textures of a fruit/vegetable, for example sliced or grated

carrot, and deciding which you like best.

• Trying a new fruit / vegitable and deciding what score you would give it out of

10

• Trying a familiar fruit/vegetable while blindfold and see if you can identify it.

• Identify a herb by smell only
