When we are asked 'What do you do at camp' it is sometimes easy to reel off the list of activities such as Archery, Abseiling, Bushcraft........ all the way to Zorbs, however it SAC is more than the activities, it is the opportunities that it presents that gives it its success.
The pictures above is show 2 boys at Easter Camp, they only met that morning about half an hour before this photo was taken. Our first activity was in the woods, the plane we were on had crash landed and the only emergency equipment we had were some tarps and hammocks to create our camp until we were rescued. Wanting to create the best camp they could the boys teamed up and looked for supplies, this pallet was an obvious but not easy choice, they had to work out how to move it (in this case like a square wheel) to camp and then get it across the raging river.
What we do is create the environment and space for a spark of #friendship, #adventure / creativity to appear and then we gently fan and encourage it so that while #FUN is being had we can gently steer those inter- and intra-personal skills that are vital for young people to grow and thrive.
This approach is built upon a solid theoretical framework that supports children being outside, experiencing adventure and playing with others.
Building on the work of Richard Louv ( Last child in the woods) and E. O. Wilson ( Biophilia) we believe it is vital that at camp we spend as much time as possible outside and in nature.
In line with the vast array of research supporting Adventure and 'Risky Play' we believe that it is important for children to have opportunities to grow beyond their comfort zone.
We believe a key ingredient in our #Fun, #Friendship #Adventure programme is learning how to cooperate and play with other children.
